Remembering Larry Hoey

Sarada George - Rochester, New York

When I first arrived at the University of Rochester in the fall of 1972 to begin graduate school, Larry Hoey was one of the first people who welcomed me to folk dancing and made a real effort to ensure that I was included in the community.

As a result, I rapidly became one of the group of dance stalwarts, including Larry, who went out to eat ice cream and sing at the local Howard Johnson's after Friday night folk dancing, and who went to all-night parties at David Valentine's house after workshop parties.

Larry left the next year, so I never knew him well, but I've always thought of him fondly and was very pleased to hear that he had continued in the folk community and was associated with the Door County festival. I had hopes of meeting him again some time, perhaps at that or another folk festival, but chance has deprived me of that possibility.

I still think of Larry as he was in the early 70's, not having seen him more than once since then. I've got some photos somewhere - one in particular that forms my strongest memory of Larry, dancing at some ridiculous hour in the middle of the night in a small belt line in a livingroom. If I can find it and scan it in, I'll post it to this site.
