A Multi-Dimensional Friend

Mitch Haycock - Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Although I didn't know Larry as long as you, and many other  long time folk dancers, I will still  have many good memories of times shared with Larry, and talking with him.  Larry was a complex individual, and I am not saying that in the negative sense of the word.  Larry and I would talk about many things; Ireland, churches, politics, travel, art, music, dance, etc.

That is what i liked most in Larry (and other people like him).  A multi-dimensional person.  He was always friendly,  approachable (people thought he was shy), but once you started to talk with him, he would open up, and a smile would cross his face, no matter what the subject, or benighness of the conversation.

Believe me, if you know me, mitch haycock, we had many benign conversations, but Larry tolerated me.  He was always affable, friendly, and a damn good dancer. He was multi-dimensioal person.   I will miss his broom dances, or whatever he could get his hands on, when he would do the dance challenges at dcff,  especially when it was with Paul Collins, Michael Kuharski, Marjorie Nugent,  and other long time dancers who would know whatever obscure dance they would pick out of their  vast archives of dance experience.

He was a true diamond in the rough of folk dancing and I will miss him very much. A multi-dimensional person.  I will miss his goofy ties, his oddball costumes that we sometimes wore to tuesday night folk dances, seeing him more in madison, door county and chicago, than i would in milwaukee.  I am especially sad he will not be at the upcoming concerts this fall we will have in milwaukee, which he said, he would attend if in town.

I will miss his subtle, smooth dance style, how effortlessly he could dance, was a true inspiration to me, and hope to someday achieve half of what he has done......  truly a multi-dimensional person.  I will especially miss the ribbing he put up from me, about when he would come back and direct Na Lesa (which by his body language and smirk, i could tell would be a cold day in hell.......).  I know he always dreaded me asking him......but it bacame a little ritual of ours, about coming back to be the artistic director for Na Lesa.

It was always a pleasure of mine to hear about his recent trips to Europe, and what he been doing in his writings about his research.  I was not aware of his poetic skills, but was aware of his scholarly research on art history, cathedrals, etc.  I was somewhat aware of his love  of the ballet,  but was not fully aware of his total passion for ballet.  Larry was multi-dimensional person.

I will close with that statement........Larry was a multi-dimensional person, and I am thankful i knew Larry for about 8-10 years, am am truly sorry for his sudden passing from this earth, but am blessed for his time with us, and his memories will always be in my heart.  I remain,

sincerely,
